What is Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) ?
The International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) defines MPD as:
“An adaptive drilling process used to precisely control the annular pressure profile throughout the wellbore. The objectives are to ascertain the downhole pressure environment limits and to manage the annular hydraulic pressure profile accordingly. It is the intention of MPD to avoid continuous influx of formation fluids to surface. Any influx incidental to the operation will be safely contained using an appropriate process.”
Conventional drilling methods are predominantly concerned with formation fluid influxes into the wellbore (Well Control Situation) where there is no additional equipment being utilized at surface to safely control this influx and maintain drilling operations. MPD overcomes these drilling problems by managing the potential influx allowing drilling operations to continue. The graph below illustrates Overbalanced Drilling (OBD), MPD and Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) regions within the wellbore, graphically.
The key to successful execution of an MPD program is to “precisely” control the annular pressure profile, by managing the downhole Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD). This is only obtained when the “fit for purpose” surface equipment (MPD equipment) as well as required fluid program are utilized.
This becomes critical when the window of operation (Pore Pressure Line and Fracture Pressure Line) is too narrow for conventional drilling techniques; commonly referred to as “Walking the Line”.
MDP technology plays an important role in onshore and offshore drilling by providing a safer environment and reducing non-productive time. There are various technologies within the MPD applications, including mud cap drilling (MCD), dual gradient drilling (DGD), constant bottom hole pressure (CBHP), Monobore MPD and return flow control drilling (RFCD).
